Bethany's First Birthday

Our sweet Bethany turned one on July 9... so I thought I would post a few photos of the birthday girl. She is such a blessing to our family... I am really glad that God chose to give us our little baby #9!

Bible Bee Week 8 Study Schedule

We took last week to review and reinforce our verses from before... but are back into it today.

This week we will be studying the book of Matthew (we have completed Genesis, 1 Samuel, and 2 Samuel.)

We will also be doing the following verses:

Category 1

Romans 8: 31-32
Romans 10: 10-11
Romans 10: 17
Romans 12: 2
Romans 15: 4
1 Corinthians 2: 12
1 Corinthians 2: 14
1 Corinthians 10: 13

Category 2

John 1: 10-14
John 3: 16-18
John 6: 37-40
John 8: 25-27
John 11: 25-27
John 17: 14-16
Romans 1: 16-17

Category 3

Acts 17: 24-28
Romans 1:28-32
Romans 5: 18-21
Romans 6: 8-14
Romans 8: 12-19
Romans 8: 31-38
Romans 10: 8-13

We've been playing lots of games to review the verses and the Bible Knowledge questions. I have combined the review with the opportunity for the children to earn money for our children's mission fund at church. Over the summer our church has a boys vs. girls competition to see who can donate the heaviest amount of coins to missions. So we have been varying the ways the children can earn monopoly money... each dollar represents a penny for missions.

So for category 1 they can earn (or lose) 1 dollar. Cat. 2= $2, and Cat. 3=$3. Or they can bet any amount to earn or lose if they know the random verse I pick. Or whatever I think of.

Another game is to play Chutes and Ladders... roll a 1 or 4, get a category 1 verse. If you get it correct, go forward 1 space. Wrong, go back 1 space. 2 and 5 get cat. 2's and move 2 spaces, cat 3 goes 3. If they don't have to memorize cat. 3, they get a cat 2 verse for that roll. When they get on a Chute or Ladder, they have to answer a bible knowledge... you get the picture. Anything to review things.

During mealtimes I review the Bible Knowledge, and they earn a dollar (remember it's fake... and only worth 1 cent!!! All to go to missions...) for each correct answer.

It's going to cost us an arm and a leg, but it's worth it.

Another thing I have done is to download the verses, the Bible Knowledge questions, and the books of the Bible onto my iPod... all the sudden the kids are eager to listen to it, just to get to use the iPod. Another great way to review.

Just some ideas for people who are studying for the Bible Bee too. We are a little behind in our memory verses, so I doubt that we will memorize every one of them, but we will get most of them.

Anyone else have any great ideas for memory work?

Well...

Once again we have been just plain too busy for posting much. Whoever said that summer days are lazy didn't live my life. Or just wasn't in their third trimester during the summer! But we are knocking some things out.

- The blackberries are ripe. the kids have been enjoying going out in the evenings and getting some. They are wild, and have a bitter after taste, but are great with ice cream, and in jam.

- We've been getting lots of cucumbers, green peppers, jalapenos, and banana peppers. And my herbs are growing strong. There are lots of green tomatoes... still waiting for them to ripen. Lots of watermelon and cantelope are growing. Can't wait to eat them... I could eat those two fruits all day long right now. Pregnancy cravings and all.

- I did not get officially diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, but did come back borderline. I will need to follow the diet, and do a two hour test once a week to monitor, but am glad I am not in the dangerous zone.

- Believe it or not, Bethany is 1 year old today! That is an amazing trick. I am not sure how in the world this year passed so fast. I'll be trying to get a few good photos today, so keep posted.

-We are almost done with the downstairs as far as decluttering and organizing goes. I threw out about 6 big garbage bags of stuff, took some to the thrift store, and generally just put back where things go. I also have about 5 boxes of things to sell. It will feel good to have it all done!

- We are re-doing our chore charts, etc. before the baby is born. It's always a transition, but hopefully things will be running smoothly again soon.

- Bible Bee memorization continues. We are taking a week to review, just to help it to stick a bit better in their heads. I plan on making a Bible Bee entry soon, just to record what all we are doing. The children have put so much of the Word in them!!!

- Soon I need to turn my mind to planning for school again. Wow... where has the summer flown? Oh yeah... in doing all this organizing!

I am 29 weeks pregnant today. Since I have 37-38 week babies, we only have 8-9 weeks left. It will come up on us all too fast, especially since we cannot figure out a name we love! Poor little thing!

Some Updates... Mercy and Otherwise...

Wow have we been busy around here. Sometimes it seems we can hardly take a breath!!! So for all of you who have been expecting phone calls, etc. Sorry. By the time the kids get to bed I fall in my own, totally exhausted. And really- any quiet time I get during the day I don't really want to fill with talking! haha.

Eric and Josiah took Mercy to Cincinnati yesterday, and all looks wonderful!!! The hemangioma is reducing drastically. Watching a miracle is an amazing thing. The other good thing is that we don't have to return for 2 whole months!!! We are continuing the propranalol since it is still working at reducing the size of the hemangioma.

In other Mercy news, the ophthalmologist said we no longer need to patch! That is good news too.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I guess while I am giving medical news, I can tell you all that I failed my 1 hour gestational diabetes test pretty spectacularly, so head in for the 3 hour this week. The numbers after the 1 hour (199) were only 1 away from where they don't bother giving you the 3 hour, so we are figuring I will be dealing with GD for the rest of the pregnancy. That will make things a little more challenging, and make the last 10 weeks seem to DRAG, that's for sure.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thought you might like to see a sweet photo of Bethany, who is going to be 1 on July 9...

And here's a photo of Eric wearing one of his father's day gifts... a BLACK, TEFLON coated grilling apron. How much more manly can you get?

As far as fun... we had the fun time of another set of visitors from our past. This time it was a friend from WSS . I worked there for 7 summers, and Eric and I met on the porch of that wonderful hotel, so it has a lot of great memories. Anyway- Claire and I had worked together for many of those summers. Now we have 16, almost 17 children! What a wonderful legacy! Here are some photos from the weekend...
